Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about mu and your account. This page will grow as more questions come in.

How do I delete my account?

mu is operated by Stichting Modal as part of the Eurosky programme. This page explains how to delete the account you use with mu and what happens to your data. Everything here works without the app.

Delete your account in the app

In the mu app, open Settings → Account → Delete account and confirm. This deletes your AT Protocol account and the data stored under it, not just your access to mu.

Deletion is permanent. Your content cannot be recovered afterwards, and your handle is released immediately and may be re-registered by someone else.

Delete your account on the web

If your account is hosted by Eurosky (the default when you create an account for mu), you can delete it without the app:

  1. Go to eurosky.social/account and sign in with your handle and account password. If you have forgotten the password, use the reset link.
  2. Choose Account → Delete account.
  3. Confirm. Deletion is permanent and your handle is released immediately.

You can also delete an Eurosky account from any compatible Atmosphere application that supports account deletion, or by emailing support@eurosky.tech from the email address on the account.

Can I take a break instead of deleting my account?

If you are not sure about deleting, you can deactivate your Eurosky account instead, from the same account page. Deactivation pauses the account: your data stays in place but is not shown on the network, your handle is held for you for 30 days, and you can come back and reactivate at any time. After 30 days of continuous deactivation the handle is released, and the account stays deactivated until you reactivate it or delete it.

What if my account is hosted by another provider?

You can use mu with an account hosted by another provider, such as Bluesky. In that case your account and its data do not live with us, and you have two separate choices.

  • Stop using mu but keep your account. Revoke mu's authorization from your account admin dashboard at your provider. If your provider does not yet offer a screen for authorized apps, email support@mu.social and we will revoke our session for your account at our end. Either way, we then delete the mu-side data we hold about your account (see below).
  • Delete the account itself. Use your provider's own deletion process, or the in-app deletion described above where your provider supports it.

What happens to my data when I delete my account?

When you delete an Eurosky-hosted account, we begin deleting your content and account data from the Eurosky PDS on the timeline set out in our Privacy Policy, and your mu access ends at the same time. The caches of identifiers and preferences that mu keeps are deleted too. Server logs and similar technical data are kept for 30 days. We retain only what we are required to keep, for example for legal preservation or abuse investigation, on the basis explained in the Privacy Policy.

If you only revoke mu's authorization, we delete the mu-side caches and preferences for your account on the same basis; your account at your provider is unaffected.

One honest caveat about open networks: public content is copied across the AT Protocol network by other operators. We notify the network of your deletion, but we cannot force operators we do not control to remove their copies.
